Grape Deep Dive: Syrah/Shiraz

Deep Dive: Syrah vs. Shiraz
Syrah or Shiraz? Same grape—but not always the same wine.
Join Liquid Art for a deep dive into one of the wine world’s most distinctive red grapes as we explore how Syrah and Shiraz developed into two recognisable styles, and how South African winemakers have made both their own.
We’ll start with the grape’s origins and explore how the names Syrah and Shiraz came to represent different stylistic traditions. Then we’ll bring the discussion home, tasting our way through a range of South African examples—from fresher, more savoury and peppery expressions to richer, riper and more powerful wines.
Along the way, we’ll examine how climate, vineyard location, ripeness, oak, and winemaking choices can dramatically change the character of the same grape.
Most importantly, this class is about discovering your own palate. By tasting contrasting styles side-by-side, you’ll learn which characteristics you prefer and what to look for the next time you’re choosing a bottle.
In this class, you’ll learn:
- Where Syrah/Shiraz originated and how the two stylistic traditions developed
- The classic differences associated with Syrah vs. Shiraz
- How South African regions and climates influence the grape
- How winemaking choices affect fruit, spice, body, tannin, and oak
- How to recognise which style best suits your palate
- What to look for when choosing your next bottle of South African Syrah or Shiraz
Whether you already love the grape or are still figuring out what all the fuss is about, this class will give you a better understanding of the differences—and, more importantly, a better understanding of what you like in your glass. As always, food will be provided.
